Love Drogheda BID has strongly condemned the recent surge in graffiti across the town, which is causing thousands of euros worth of damage to local buildings and placing an unnecessary burden on business owners.
Over recent weeks, businesses have reported a sharp increase in graffiti, leaving them frustrated and disheartened. Whilst there is great work being undertaken by the Tús team supported by Love Drogheda BID, many owners are being forced to spend their own resources on cleaning and repairs, especially those with stone or permeable facades, this needless expenditure is diverting funds that could be re-invested into growing their businesses.
“This is not just mindless vandalism – it’s damaging the image of our town, hurting businesses, and undermining the pride that people have in Drogheda,” said Niall Kierans, Former Chairperson, at Love Drogheda BID. “Business owners should not be left footing the bill for this continuous destruction.”
The rise in graffiti comes at a particularly disappointing time, following the launch of a summer pilot project by Love Drogheda BID aimed at enhancing the presentation of the town centre and helping property owners to restore the condition of some buildings. This initiative has seen significant efforts made to improve Drogheda’s streetscape, but the ongoing vandalism threatens to undo this progress.
Love Drogheda BID is urging those responsible to stop immediately and is calling on the community to work together to protect Drogheda’s town centre. The organisation is also engaging with business owners to review CCTV and the local Garda to explore stronger preventative measures and more effective enforcement.
“Drogheda deserves a town centre that reflects the pride and hard work of its community and businesses,” added. Nichola Kelly of Scotch Hall Shopping Centre, “We all have a role to play in ensuring our town is a welcoming, attractive, and safe place to live, work, and visit.”
