Love Drogheda BID (Business Improvement District) would like to acknowledge and applaud the recent sustained efforts of An Garda Síochána and the collaborative community safety initiatives that are significantly enhancing the perception and reality of safety across Drogheda. The business organisation, who regularly meets with An Garda Síochána with some of their members, commends the visible and proactive policing presence, including the location of the Garda Community Safety Van at St Peter’s Church on West Street.
There is now an everyday presence of beats on the street from the Community Police as well as the community engagement van in the town. This visible reassurance is a cornerstone of the broader, integrated approach to community safety, which has seen An Garda Síochána working hand-in-hand with residents, businesses, and community groups.
"The proactive engagement and continued presence of An Garda Síochána are vital for the confidence of our businesses and the entire community," Trevor Connolly, CEO, Love Drogheda BID. "We've seen first-hand the positive outcomes when all stakeholders work together, and the dedication of our local Gardaí is truly appreciated."
Hubert Murphy, CEO of Drogheda and District Chamber added, “working in tandem with the likes of An Garda Siochana, the local authority, Love Drogheda BID and others is vital. Having a strong garda presence on the main street is massive and appreciated and is something that the public and business community find very reassuring, both during the day and especially after dark. “
Further bolstering Drogheda’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination is its prestigious Purple Flag accreditation. Drogheda was first awarded this international recognition in2019, and its renewal in January 2024 underscores the town’s unwavering commitment to fostering a safe, vibrant, and diverse evening and night-time economy. Mark Davies, Drogheda’s Evening and Night Time Co-ordinator (Louth County Council) has noted that ”The Purple Flag status is a testament to the effective collaboration between businesses, local authorities, and emergency services in ensuring a secure environment for all who live, work, and socialise in Drogheda after dark.”
In addition, the "See Something Say Something" campaign, launched in Drogheda in September 2023,has empowered citizens to become active partners in community safety. This confidential and free text alert service allows residents and visitors to anonymously report anti-social or suspicious behaviour by texting "DROGHEDA" to 50555. The campaign has already seen a positive impact, providing Gardaí with crucial, non-urgent information directly from the community, further enhancing their ability to respond effectively.
Yvette McCormack, Drogheda Community Policing Unit, added, "These initiatives are not just isolated programmes; they are interconnected and help build safety and community spirit in Drogheda. Strong active Garda Patrols, initiatives such as the Purple Flag guiding our night-time economy and the empowering 'See Something Say Something' campaign, contributes to making Drogheda an even better place for everyone."
Love Drogheda BID remains dedicated to working collaboratively with An Garda Síochána, Louth County Council, ou rBID members. and all community stakeholders to ensure Drogheda continues to thrive as a safe, attractive, and prosperous town for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
