A new initiative aimed at attracting more businesses to Drogheda town centre has been launched by Drogheda & District Chamber, Louth County Council, Local Enterprise Office Louth and Love Drogheda BID.
The initiative is designed to make opening a business in Drogheda more achievable by connecting entrepreneurs with practical guidance, local expertise and the financial supports available to new businesses.
A key incentive is Louth County Council’s Commercial Rates Waiver Scheme for 2026, which offers substantial savings for businesses locating in eligible vacant town centre premises.
Under the scheme, qualifying businesses can benefit from:
• 100% commercial rates waiver in year one
• 50% waiver in year two
• 25% waiver in year three
The scheme applies to commercial premises that have been vacant for more than 12 months and aims to encourage a wider range of businesses to locate in the town centre.
In addition to the rates waiver, those considering opening a business in Drogheda can access a range of supports through the partner organisations, including start-up guidance, training and mentoring through Local Enterprise Office Louth, advice on premises and planning, and support promoting the business once it opens.
The partners say the initiative is about reducing uncertainty for entrepreneurs and making it easier for good business ideas to become reality.
A spokesperson for the initiative said:
“Starting a business can feel daunting, particularly when it comes to costs and navigating the practical steps involved. By working together, the Chamber, Louth County Council, the Local Enterprise Office and Love Drogheda BID can offer both guidance and meaningful incentives that make opening a business in Drogheda more achievable.”
Sarah Taaffe, Chairperson of Love Drogheda BID, welcomed the initiative, saying:
"This initiative represents a transformative step for the heart of Drogheda. By removing some of the barriers for new businesses to open and thrive, we are actively cultivating a town centre that is vibrant, diverse, and full of opportunity. This commercial rate waiver, bolstered by the dedicated support of our partner organisations, provides a clear and welcoming pathway for entrepreneurs to call Drogheda home. We are eager to welcome the next generation of business owners who will bring fresh energy, innovation, and choice to our historic streets."
The initiative is particularly interested in attracting a diverse range of businesses that will add to the vibrancy and mix of the town centre.
